Triage: Key Moments Nat N

Key Moment 1- Kurdistan The first time we are introduced to the protagonist Mark and the event that has taken place. Narration is confusing to,show not only Mark’s delirium but also that Mark hasn’t revealed the truth yet. He’s skirting around it.

The Hospital Intro to Talzani Shift of Mark from observer to participant Here we learn the randomness of war and the fact that is uncontrollable, something Mark realises later. Here we also discover Mark’s fear of disappearing, later seen in his exploration of Carlos Perez.

In Bed (Not Sex) Mark tells Elena that nothing happened in Kurdistan – a lie. This shows he wants to distance himself from what happened in Kurdistan. Even if it means pushing away those closest to him. This could be applied to the Western War Myth that real men don’t talk about pain etc

Party Here, Mark duplicates his friends actions. This shows he in fact has not recovered at all from Kurdistan so to show he is normal he has to copy other peoples’ emotions. Shows he is no longer himself.

Bathtub/Hospital Shows the major shift in Mark and Elena’s relationship. Elena is now the dominant one taking care of Mark, who is subordinate to her. Mark’s body has just fallen to pieces due to the pain he has kept bottled up inside. He is suffering because of his denial.

The River – Spain Mark finally says goodbye to Colin. He has released his pain and can now go back to being a normal human being. Now his pain is out, he starts to show emotion. This can be seen through Elena’s observation of Mark’s eyes. [instead of green stones] “eyes lit with longing and sad hopefulness and promise of future laughter…”
