Okay or No Way!!! Introduction to Plagiarism

O The word plagiarism comes from a Latin word for kidnapping. O Someone’s words and thoughts are personal property….just like an ipod or a bicycle O ( (

Okay or No Way!! O Mandy has to write a paragraph about water resources for science. She finds a paragraph on a web site that is perfect!! Mandy rewrites it in her own words. Is that okay??

Okay or No Way!!! O Chris just found some good stuff on the Web for his science report about sharks. He highlights a paragraph that explains that most sharks grow to be only 3 to 4 feet long and can't hurt people. Chris copies it and pastes it into his report. He quickly changes the font so it matches the rest of the report and continues his research. O ( (

O Ask yourself, "Would I know this if I hadn't read it on that website or in that book?" If the answer is no, list the source. ( tracking=CL ClassroomTab#( tracking=CL ClassroomTab#)

Okay or No Way!! O Marybeth spends a lot of time searching Encyclopedia Britannica online edition. She finds the perfect picture for her social studies project. She copies and pastes it into her PowerPoint project and gives credit to the source on the slide. Is this okay???

O It’s okay to copy and paste photos, drawings, and graphs into a report IF you tell who made it/where you found it

If you are not sure… O Ask your teacher or ME!!!
