3 Look Ahead look only at the headings and illustrations on one page then to the next, read only the title, headings and subheadings in bold type Prepares your mind for where the text is headed Like looking at a road map before driving off in the car.

4 Look Back having read the passage, go back to the beginning, study its heading and subheadings one more time what was the author trying to tell me Dont expect to remember what you read unless you go back over it. Like painting a house, a second coat is often needed.

5 Jump to The End read the first paragraph then the last paragraph then read all How does the end of the story connect to the beginning. Boredom is converted to real interest.

6 Ask Questions make yourself curious by posing a question about an articles title and subtitle you will actively seek and answer to own your question You become curious, interested --not bored.

7 Make a mental movie while reading, make a mental movie in your mind example you are the director Your mind becomes more curious, creative, and and actively engaged. A thinking mind asks questions

8 Notice the Organization be aware of choices an author makes for organizing - what person I, he etc. first event to last event, or last to first, close up to broad, broad to close up The author decides where he wants to lead -- you must try to follow. Makes you more alert and aware as you read.

9 If you get lost go back. When you read a paragraph that makes no sense, go back an reread it. Skilled readers say I didnt get that let me read it one more time. Unskilled readers think they must understand everything on the first try

10 Keep reading get past the vocabulary bumps whenever you reach a string fo unfamiliar words do not stop -do not allow yourself to become frustrated. Like speed bumps in a parking lot get over them and keep on going. Draw on your determination to understand the paragraph as a whole

11 Take a short break if frustration on a reading test begins to jangle your nerves stop and rest --look at the ceiling -etc Be patient with yourself and the author Take a break if necessary but keep reading to the end.

12 Take Control come into a test with a plan based on your own strengths as reader and thinker. Some strategies may help more than others. Make a plan on which strategies work for you. Remember them and use them.
