Acadians

When was Acadia first settled? Acadia was first settled in 1600’s.

Why did the French come to Nova Scotia? The French came to Nova Scotia because of the good soil, fur trade and the fish, animals were plentiful.

Who led the first settlement in Acadia? Pierrè Du Gua de Monts

Acadian Symbols The emblem contains the blue and red of the Acadian flag as the star of Mary. The anchor represents the ties with seafaring and with the original settling of Port Royal. The scale reminds us that Michel Boudrot was an officer of the state in Port Royal. The crown represents the tie with Port Royal; the "fleur de leys" on the crown are a symbol of early French presence in the colony. There are eleven of them representing Michel Boudrot's eleven children.

How & what did they hunt? The acadians hunted ambush style. Deer, moose, elk, & fish.

Why did the British want the land? For the rich soil & Animal population.

How did they live? Acadians didn't have a hard time. Despite the intense cold and the long winters, the smallpox, the diarrhea, there were a lot of babies die, the fight against the Nature and the deportations, one might say that they didn't live so badly.

Acadian Expulsion The French Acadians would not pledge allegiance to the king of England. So the British deported the French to the Eastern United States.

Acadian Map From their base in Port-Royal the Acadians moved south along the coast in fishing settlement & north to farming communities going from Grand-Pre to N.B. Also to Louisburg, Cape Breton.

Are there any Living acadinans today? The Acadians still live in the Atlantic Provinces today.

When did the Acadians return to N.S.? After the feelings between England & France got better. The Acadians were allowed to return and start over.
