2 Did you know…. Did you know that the Acadians originated as peasants coming from France to Canada in 1632? Did you know that after living in Canada for more than 100 years and a shift between rulers, the Acadians were eventually exiled from French Acadia? Did you know that in 1755, the Acadians were literally evicted from their land because of their refusal to take oath of allegiance to Protestant British King? Did you know that is was decided by Charles Lawrence to send the Acadians to British colonies on Atlantic Coast? Did you know that the Great Expulsion of 1755, The Deportation or Le Grand Dérangement was a massive upheaval for Acadians in Nova Scotia?

Did you know that when the first Acadians arrived in April of 1764, Louisiana was owned by Spain but still retained all of its French culture Did you know that the first arrivals consisted of 20 Acadians who had been in New York and their relatives recently released from Fort Edwards, Nova Scotia? (This group settled along the Mississippi River around the boundary of St. John and St. James parishes).  Did you know that Acadians were known as hard-working trappers & farmers who valued land, family and their Catholic faith?

4 Did you know…. Did you know that in 1764, the arrival of first Acadian group in Louisiana occurred? Did you know that in July of 1767, 210 Acadians were settled at St. Gabriel? Did you know that the first groups were given supplies from Spanish government warehouses? Did you know that the Acadians settling in the Louisiana regions raised livestock on prairies?

5 Did you know…. Did you know that Acadiana is a now a twenty two parish area in Louisiana? Did you know that St. Martinville is known as the “Birthplace of Acadiana?” Did you know that the word “Cajun” came from the French pronunciation of the word, Acadianne, meaning “people of Acadia?” Did you know that a large portion of present-day Louisiana is home to descendants of Acadians?
