Management in tough economic times No personal experience of managing in a recession This is not a short term problem It’s hard (but others have it worse) We take problems into this difficult time

Outline of talk We take our values into this situation Ways of addressing the issues –taking costs out of business –finding other sources of income –collaboration –innovation and creativity Don’t forget other agendas Looking after our staff and ourselves

IS values IS values... delivering excellent services We take pride in providing a professional service which meets the needs of our users. effective team working We contribute and collaborate effectively within and across our teams. the individual We treat each other with respect and appreciate everyone's strengths and contribution. effective communication We embrace effective and open communication as critical to achieving success. continuous improvement We continuously develop and improve our services in line with our vision, mission and goals.

1. Taking costs out of the business Review all activities Increase productivity Review staff costs, as biggest item Check that resource is not tied up unnecessarily Think about reducing quality--not necessarily doing as perfectly as we have always Find other sources of funds

2. Finding other sources of income Should we devote resources to finding other income steams? Where from? –research income? –charging for services? –new business opportunities? –Grants? –philanthrophic giving? The University political environment—how strong are we?

3. Collaboration Work with others to reduce costs or brings in an income stream Others may be in the University, or other Universities or external Move to the network level (cloud computing or outsourcing) Maintain competitive advantage in collaboration

4. Innovation and creativity The most important thing is to keep innovating This needs resource Small innovations and major innovations We need to set the tone for creativity

Other agenda Carry on with other agenda—this may be the opportunity to make real shifts, eg –Sustainability –Open agenda –Working with our user groups

Managing in tough times These 4 themes are in effect what we have always done, but in more difficult circumstances –taking costs out of business –finding other sources of income –collaboration –innovation and creativity Take time for strategic thinking

Looking after our staff and ourselves Share our values, our thinking with all staff Communicate, communicate, communicate Staff issues: motivation Staff issues: development Staff issues: managing difficult issues Being a good boss—what is a good boss? Looking after and supporting ourselves IS values
