Rhythm PT 2

Common Notation The way in which music is transcribed is known as common notation. –Common notation divides music into segments known as measures or bars. –These segments are divided with vertical lines known as bar lines

Example of common notation

Downbeat The first beat of a measure in music. These beats are organized in a pattern of beats know as a Time Signature.

Time Signature The top number indicates how many beats are in a measure. The bottom number indicates the type of number that will receive one beat.

Time Signature Understanding the bottom number. –4 = A Quarter note (a fourth) –The quarter note will receive one beat

Common Time The most common note values are known as common time.

While music is made up of notes (pitches, sounds), music can also employee silences (rests).

Syncopation Any rhythm that puts and emphasis on a beat or part of the beat that is not emphasized. –This is sometimes know as you off-beat or between the beats

Syncopation Follow the following week for an excellent example on guitar XZns Syncopation

Can happen anywhere in a song Any weak note in a progression can be accented through Syncopation.

Syncopation Syncopation can make any song sound jaunty, jazzy, unsteady, surprising, uncertain, and exciting
