It is an expectation that reading books and reading records are in school every day. The class information board encourages independence, displaying; the weekly timetable, music lesson times and some groupings so that the children can organise themselves. To encourage independent thinking and working a Brain, Book, Buddy, Boss system has been introduced. Each morning work is displayed so that the children come into the classroom and start work immediately. Spelling groups proved to be very successful last year and will therefore continuing again this year. The children will be allocated their group soon. Spellings will take place 3 times each week. Swimming and P.E. will take place on Wednesdays with the children learning sporting skills from a specialist teacher in the afternoon.

It is an expectation that children read at home at least three times a week. It is extremely important that the children understand what they are reading. Children like to choose challenging books but sometimes these books can include vocabulary that they do not understand. Asking questions and discussing the meaning of some words will help your child to gain a better understanding of the story. If you would like some ideas about the type of questions to ask you can find a list under Documents and Letters/Literacy and Numeracy on the school website. Children’s reading will be monitored in school through Guided Reading sessions and one-to-one reading. Reading records will be checked on a weekly basis and your comments noted.

Class homework is set on Fridays and is expected back in school on Tuesdays. Homework will either be Maths or Literacy. Sometimes the same task will be set for all the children but mostly it will be set at each child’s individual level and will follow on from class work to consolidate the knowledge and skills learnt. Projects may be set for homework but they will cover no more than three weeks of homework. Reading at least three times a week (see previous slide) There may be some homework to revise and practice the spelling rules taught during spelling groups. Mental Maths and times tables should all be revised and rehearsed. Even if it’s just 5 minutes during a car journey. For example; What do you add to 56 to make 100 or 1000? If I spend 36p and 84p how much change do I get from £2, £5?
