Day 34 Bell stART ELEMENTS of DESIGN Write in your sketch book Before attempting to draw a portrait practice drawing the human skull from various views such as the frontal view, the side view and the 3/4 view. This is the foundation of portrait drawing. Pay close attention to proportions when drawing. Note: For serious students I recommend getting a good anatomy book and studying it thoroughly.

Continue: Day 34 Write in your sketch book: First, place your photo portrait out so your teacher can check to make sure it is usable Second, on a new page in your sketch book, 1. With a pencil, draw the border of your picture plane to within ¼ of your paper 2. Use black and or brown crayon as your medium 3. Begin with the negative space to develop contours of both skulls from projected image 4. Complete figures with a full range of values to render what you observe of the features in both skulls 5. Your drawing must be completed within the class period

Day 35 Bell stART ELEMENTS of DESIGN Write in your sketch book: To draw the human face accurately, first become familiar with the basic proportions.

Traditional rules of proportion show the face divided into six equal squares, two by three. 1.In your sketch book use a ruler to draw a 9 X 6 rectangle. Divide the rectangle into six 3 X 3 squares. 2.Draw a circle in the square made by the upper two thirds of the rectangle. 3.Draw the lower contour line of the nose on the center line at the bottom of your circle.

The eyes sit on the horizontal center 4.Draw a line in the center of the rectangle. 5.Render eyes on the center line with guidance from the diagram of Basic Eyes below.

The mouth on the center of the lower third. 6.Draw a horizontal line in the center of the lower third of the rectangle.

Go back up to the horizontal line you drew for the eyes. On either side of this, draw ears. Notice that the ears stick out wider at the top and then come in near the lobes. Some lobes are attached and some are loose. Ears are pretty complicated to draw - keep them simple at first until you get an idea of their construction.

Remember your face drawing is an ideal which does not account for racial and individual variation, observing these basic proportions gives you a starting point to measure against. Use the rest of class today to study for your quiz on the Elements and Principles of Design tomorrow!

Day 36 Bell stART ELEMENTS of DESIGN No sketch book logging. For your quiz you will need a pen or pencil. Remove all other items off the table surface. No talking, keep your eyes on your own paper When you have completed the quiz, turn it over and wait for everyone in the class to finish

Day 37 Bell stART ELEMENTS of DESIGN Write in your sketch book: Todays Objective: To use the grid method, you need to have a ruler, a paper copy of your image, and a pencil to draw lines on the image. 1. Create a 1 x 1 grid using a pencil over the top of your photo. (4 X 5) 2. Draw a grid of equal ratio on your blank paper surface 3. Then draw the image on your paper, focusing on one square at a time, until the entire image has been transferred. Erase the grid lines when you are finished. 4. Your goal is to complete the linear enlargement in class today.

The important thing to remember when drawing the grids is that they must have a 1:1 ratio. This is very important - otherwise your drawing will be distorted! Basically, a 1:1 ratio means: You will have the exact same number of lines on your paper as you will on your reference photo, and that in both cases, the lines must be equally spaced apart - perfect squares
