Playing a VHS tape. Check to be sure the TV Monitor and DVD/VHS deck are turned on. Insert the videocassette into the VHS slot on the DVD/VHS deck. Press the "Play" button. If an image from the videotape does not appear on the monitor, press the “TV/VIDEO" button on the TV Monitor. Playback can be controlled with remotes or by controls on the front of the machines.

Playing a DVD. Check to be sure the TV Monitor and DVD/VHS deck are turned on. (Use the power button indicated on the previous slide) Press the "OPEN/CLOSE" button on the DVD/VHS deck to open the DVD tray. Place the DVD into the DVD tray, shiny side down. Press the "OPEN/CLOSE" button to close the DVD tray. Playback can be controlled with remotes or by the controls on the front of the machines.

Hooking up a laptop. There is a computer monitor cable near the podium which comes down from the ceiling. The connector is trapezoidal; be sure the connections are oriented properly. Press the connector on the end of the cable into the external monitor port on the laptop. You may wish to fasten the connector more securely to the laptop with the screws on either side of the connector. Turn on the laptop.

Turning on the Projector. Point the remote control toward the projector. Press and gently hold down the on/off switch. When the bulb in the projector lights, release the switch. If the projector is on, but your laptop is not, you may see a white screen with the “3M” logo. Turn on the laptop before proceeding.

Selecting Projector Input. If the laptop is on and you do not see an image from the laptop, gently press the RGB button on the projector remote several times until "RGB" is displayed by the projector. If the image from the computer screen is not showing, go on to the next slide. If the image is displayed, skip the next slide.

Sending the laptop image through the projector. It is often necessary to activate the external monitor connection on the laptop by pressing two keys. One is a function key at the top of the keyboard. it has “CRT/LCD" printed on it. Hold down the "Fn" key on the bottom left of the keyboard and at the same time, press the “CRT/LCD” key If the image from the computer screen does not appear, press the two keys again; continue until the image from the laptop appears on the screen. If you press this combination of keys more than 4 times, and you still do not see the image from the computer projected onto the screen, please double check all connections and power buttons before calling for help. When the image from the laptop appears projected onto the screen, you can now use the computer to run any software on it. N.B. These instructions are written only for laptops owned by the library. If you wish to use your own laptop, please consult the manual that came with your computer or contact George Missonis at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled class time.

Using the Internet There is an internet connection in the front of the classroom. You can connect the laptop to it using a network cable. You should currently check with the IT Services Help Desk (ext. 7676) at least 48 hours before the class to make sure the connection is turned on.

Turning off the Projector. Point the projector remote control at the projector. Press and gently hold down the on/off switch. When the black confirmation screen appears, press the on/off switch again. The bulb in the projector should turn off (If you are using a portable projector, do not disconnect the power until the fan stops). If you're using a laptop, you can now disconnect it and turn it off.
