What does good RE look like? Alan Brine: National Adviser for RE Regional SACRE Conference Hull April 13

Headlines: Pupil progress Across Key Stages 1 – 3 pupil progress is not good enough in 6 out of 10 schools Better at KS4 – BUT issues with GCSE Too many pupils leaving schools with low levels of knowledge and understanding of religion Weak progress reduces ability of RE to contribute to pupils learning and personal development Add presentation title to master slide | 2

What is getting in the way? In primary: Status – rhetoric v reality PPA issue Teacher confidence and expertise Curriculum fragmentation and isolation Confused purpose Add presentation title to master slide | 3

What is getting in the way? In secondary: Misconceptions about the Ofsted lesson KS3 – 4 continuity and progression Non-specialists Lack of challenge Patchy provision Add presentation title to master slide | 4

The misconceptions about the good lesson Learning objectives communicated mechanistically but not telling the story or engaging the pupils. Over-complex lesson planning. Over-use of levels to review progress in lessons at the expense of genuine reflection on learning. Learning driven by too many tasks – phoney pace Narrow use of digital technology leading to didactic teaching. Add presentation title to master slide | 5

Add presentation title to master slide | 6 Four Cs to securing good RE Consistency of practice Strong subject leadership Effective monitoring and improvement planning Consistent planning, manageable assessment Regular dialogue amongst staff, CPD opportunities Clarity of purpose Shared understanding by staff of core purpose of RE Clear, shared model of effective learning in RE

Add presentation title to master slide | 7 Four Cs to making progress Challenging learning Engaging pupils with stimulating ideas and enquiries which encourage independent thought and reflection Genuine process of enquiry – posing questions, carrying out investigations, summarising findings, evaluating conclusions Collaboration in learning Ensuring pupils are clear about purpose Active involvement of pupils in their learning

Thanks to William aged 13 If RE isnt challenging its just learning facts about religion. If you arent learning how to question its not proper RE - thats when it gets interesting. Our teachers motto is: Dont just answer the question; question the answer. Add presentation title to master slide | 8
