The drill press is the preferred tool for making holes in materials.

Alternatives to the Drill Press There are many ways to drill holes in material You could use a manual hand drill.

Alternatives to the Drill Press There are many ways to drill holes in material You could use a electric plug-in or cordless hand drills.

Drill Press Uses The drill press can be used for a variety of applications. It may be used to drill through metals, woods, plastics, Wood Metal Plastics

Drill Bits for the Drill Press You may use a variety of drill bits on the drill press.

Drill Press Safety Wear eye protection at all times. Do not operate the drill press until you have passed all safety requirements.

Drill Press Safety Always make sure that small stock is securely clamped in a drill press vise. Do not try to hold small pieces of stock by hand. Place the long end of the piece being drilled to the left side. This is so it will hit the post and not the operator, should the material slip and start rotating.

Chuck On/Off Switch Key Depth Stop Feed Handle Table Chuck Column Let’s identify the important parts of the Drill Press. They are the on/off switch, chuck, depth stop, feed handle, table, speed control, and column. Column

Drill Press Safety Always remove the chuck key immediately after installing a bit. Place key back in holder Never wear gloves when operating the drill press. They may get caught.

Drill Press Safety Do not wear your hair long, or wear long sleeves or dangling strings or jewelry. Tuck it in or tie it back! Back the bit out frequently on deep cuts, to clean and cool the bit.

Drill Press Safety Make certain the table and drill are properly adjusted to avoid drilling into the table. Do not talk to anyone while operating the machine.

Drill Press Safety One person machine- 99% of the time. Make all adjustments with the power off and the bit standing still.

Drill Press Safety Use care in reaching around the machine. Never remove chips with your fingers. Keep them away from the revolving tool.

Drill Press Safety Loose clothing must be secured and sleeves pulled up to bare forearms Long hair must be tied back or wear a hat.

Drill Press Welcome to a brief tutorial video discussing how to safely use and operate the Drill Press.

Overview Used for drilling or boring holes The Drill Press is used for drilling or boring holes. It can sometimes even be used for sanding or routoring.

Always wear your safety glasses Always wear your safety glasses anytime you are using or are near power equipment.

Select a drill bit Before you can make a hole, choose a drill bit. There are a wide variety to pick from.

Twist Bits Sizes range: 1/16” to 1/2” There are twist bits. These are the most commonly used drill bits and made from a spiral piece of metal. They range from 1/16 of an inch to 1/2 of an inch. They are located by the drill press. Sizes range: 1/16” to 1/2”

Spade Bits Sizes range: 1/4” to 1” Another type is a spade bit. The spade bit gets its name from the spade shape of the drill bit’s head These range in size from 1/4 of an inch to 1 inch The spade bits are located in the hand tool cabinet. Sizes range: 1/4” to 1”

Forstner Bits Sizes range: 1/4” to 2” The third type of of drill bit found in the lab is a forstner bit. These bits get their name from its inventor. This type of drill bit is easy to spot with its large head. They range in size from 1/4 of an inch to 2 inches. Sizes range: 1/4” to 2”

Insert bit into chuck Tighten it by hand Once you have selected a drill bit, insert it into the chuck and tighten it by hand. What type of drill bit have I selected in this image? Tighten it by hand

Find the chuck key… …in the key chuck holder Next you will need to find the key chuck in order to tighten the drill bit enough to keep it from slipping in the chuck. You can find the key chuck in the key chuck holder below the start button about eye level on the drill press. …in the key chuck holder

Tighten with chuck key Remember: Righty Tighty Here I am tightening my drill bit with the key chuck. Remember: righty tighty and lefty loosey Remember: Righty Tighty

Set depth stop… …to desired height With my drill bit tight in the chuck, I am setting the depth stop to prevent the drill bit from going too deep. …to desired height

Never leave the… …key chuck in the chuck Make sure you do not leave the key chuck in the chuck when you start the drill. It you do the key chuck in the chuck, it might fly off and hurt you or someone standing close by. …key chuck in the chuck

Put the chuck key… …in the chuck key holder Be sure to put the key chuck back in the key chuck holder after starting the drill press. That way you will know where it is when you need it later. …in the chuck key holder

Use the handle… …lower and raise the bit With the drill press running, pull the feed handle down to drill into your piece of wood. If you have set your depth stop correctly, you can pull the feed handle down until it cannot go any further. …lower and raise the bit

Hold your stock… …tightly as you drill

If not, your stock may… …spin violently around If not, your stock may start to spin violently around in a circle. Do not panic! Do not try and stop the board from spinning by grabbing it with your hand. You will only hurt yourself. …spin violently around

Hold the feed handle… …and turn the machine off Instead, turn the drill press off while holding the feed handle down. As long as the drill bit is down in the wood, it cannot fly off of the machine …and turn the machine off

Small pieces should… …be clamped to the table If you are drilling into a small piece of wood try using the vise to hold it or clamp it to the table. …be clamped to the table

2” 2” Keeps hands at least… …”Circle of Danger” Keep your hands at least 4 inches from the revolving bit of the drill press. …”Circle of Danger”

Keep hair, loose clothes In addition to keeping your hands 4 inches away from the bit. Maintain a margin of safety by keeping long hair, shirt sleeves, baggy jackets, and jewelry away from the revolving bit. If any of these loose items get too close the drill press will suck them in and pull the person attached to it as well. …away from the bit

Press the stop button… …to stop the drill press When you are finished with the drill press, press the stop button. Make sure the key chuck is in the key chuck holder and any drill bits you used are returned to the proper place. …to stop the drill press

Before you start… Is this piece too small to hold? …answer these questions Is this piece too small to hold? What size hole am I drilling? Should I use a clamp or vise? Anytime you are going to use the drill press, first answer these questions: Is this piece of wood too small to hold? If you cannot hold the piece of wood to be drill and have your hands 4 inches away, consider clamping down. 2. What size hole am I drilling? Know what size hole you want to drill. Then make sure the drill bit you select is the appropriate size. There is nothing worse than having a hole too small or too large.

Review What is is the margin of safety on the drill press? 2 inches- Circle of Danger What things should be kept away from the revolving drill bit? Long hair, shirtsleeves, baggy jackets, jewelry and hands Now, for some review question. What is the margin of safety on the drill press? Keep your hands four inches away from the revolving bit 2. What things should be kept away from the revolving drill bit? Keep long hair, shirt sleeves, baggy jackets, and jewelry outside the margin of safety.

Review What should you do if your stock starts to spin in the drill press? While holding the feed handle down, turn the machine off Where should the chuck key be when starting the drill press? In it’s holder 3. What should you do if your stock starts to spin in the drill press? Do NOT panic! While holding the feed handle down to keep the wood from spinning off, turn the machine off. Do not let go of the handle until the machine has come to a stop. 4. Where should the key chuck be when starting the drill press? The key chuck should NOT be in the chuck it should either be in the key chuck holder or in your hand as you start the machine.
