2 GENERAL SAFETY RULES 1.Wear protective eyewear. 2.Tie back long hair. 3.Tuck in shirt and loose clothing. 4.Remove jewelry and roll up long sleeves. 5.Do not distract machine operator. 6.Wear closed toed shoes. 7.Keep your fingers at least 2 inches away from the blade. 2 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. 6 MAJOR PARTS OF THE SCROLL SAW The speed adjustment controls the speed of the blade. The blade tension adjustment adjusts the tension on the blade when you install a blade. The hold down adjustment is a metal arm used to hold the material being cut to the table. The blower nozzle blows dust away from the cut so you can see your cutting line on the material. 6 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved

7 SAFETY RULES FOR SCROLL SAW 1.The hold down clamp must be adjusted to touch the top of the wood. 2.Do not back out of a cut. 3.The teeth on the blade must point down. 4.Make sure the blade is properly installed and the tension is set. 5.The width of the blade determines the size of curve that can be cut on the saw. 7 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. 10 1. The blade is a circular band of steel with teeth shaped on its front edge. 2. The upper blade guide is an assembly that keeps the blade from twisting. The depth of cut is adjusted by raising or lowering the upper blade guide. 3. The upper blade guide adjustment knob is used to raise and lower the upper blade guide. It is on the right side of the saw. 4. The work table is the support for the material to be cut. A miter gauge slot is formed into the table to cut angles on the saw. The work table also has a fence guide to cut straight lines. The table is also able to tilt for angle cuts. 5. The miter gauge is a guide that will adjust to cut angles and 90 degrees. 6. The fence is a guide for straight cuts and for re-sawing thickness. MAJOR PARTS OF THE BAND SAW 10 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012. All rights reserved

11 1.On the band saw the operator should adjust the upper guide ¼ inch above the material to be cut. 2.The size of circle that can be cut on the band saw is determined by the width of the blade 3.Guide the material slowly, letting the machine do the work. 12 SAFETY RULES FOR BAND SAW 4. No one should stand on the right side of the machine because the blade could break and bounce out of the guides and hurt that person. 5. The band saw should NOT cut round material without using a set of V-blocks. 6. Avoid backing out of cuts. 7. Immediately shut off the band saw if the blade should break while you are using the machine. Let it come to a stop and then get the instructor. 12 Copyright © Texas Education Agency, 2012.
