1 Lab Safety

2 General safety rules No more than 2 students working at a machine at any one time Safety glasses must be worn when using power tools and cordless equipment When sanding open the back door or turn on the air cleaner. Remember to plug it in. Never stand on tables or chairs while in the shop Always wait for the machine to come to a full stop before interrupting another student No loose clothing or jewelry Hair longer than your shoulders must be pulled back

3 General Safety rules All students will be assigned a specific clean up task You will have 10 minutes to clean up the shop Use a brush and dust pan for the counters and empty all sawdust into the trash Place small pieces of wood into the scrap box Clean all tools this includes manual, cordless and industrial Clean the counters and floors. Under no circumstances are you to use the vacuum Do not sweep sawdust outside

4 General Safety rules The teeth of the machine blades point downward.
Wait until the machine stops before you walk away from it. Do not start any cutting with your wood against the blade or drill bit. The teacher MUST see your blueprints before you start work Wear safety glasses when using ANY machine If another student is not demonstrating safe behavior, it is YOUR responsibility to inform the teacher. If a machine is not operating properly, do not use it and tell the teacher. Do not try and fix the machine.

5 Clean Up

6 Clean up You will have 10 minutes to tidy up the shop.
The teacher will NOT write you a pass because you did not start on time or because you dragged your feet. Use a brush or a piece of wood to clean scraps or saw dust off the tables of the machine. Points will be taken off your project if you do not do a thorough clean up.

7 Clean up

8 Hand tools

9 Drill Holds a driver to screw in Phillip screws
Used to drill pilot holes before screwing or nailing pieces of wood together Automatic chuck, which holds drill bits and driver Plug into the outlets hanging down Largest drill bit size is 3/8”

10 Hand tools

11

12 Machines

13 Band Saw The large blade sits on two wheels
The blade guide must be no more than 1/4” above the wood The band saw is used to cut large and thick pieces of wood. It can also cut through some plastics It can cut circles in large diameters

14 Band saw 93” blade that runs on 2 large wheels Great for rough cuts
If the diameter being cut is too small the blade will come off the wheel Adjust blade guide based on wood thickness Blade guide must be 1/4” above wood. Handle for the blade guide is behind the large wheel. Always use 2 hands Stay with the machine until it stops Keep hands away from the blade Use a brush or piece of wood to move scraps away from the blade

15 Scroll Saw Pressure Foot Table Insert Cuts wood up to 3/4” thick
It can cut BALSA WOOD for the CO2 car Use a hand saw if the wood is too small to hold The blade moves up and down The pressure foot is kept on top of the wood and prevents the wood from vibrating up and down Table insert is the red metal piece Table Insert

16 Scroll saw Set-up pressure foot right over top of your piece of wood, touching the wood Start blade Apply downward pressure You can use either the high or low speed while cutting Keep hands away from the blade Do not use scroll saw to cut plywood, it is too strong and the blade is too thin

17 Drill press On/Off Switch Spindle Chuck Table Handle Clearance Hole
Keep a scrap piece of wood on the table Use a vice and or cordless drill when drilling a hole in a small piece of wood Place the chuck key on top of the drill press before and after using the equipment Spindle Chuck Table Handle Clearance Hole Table Chuck Key

18 Drill press Table Chuck and key
(righty tighty, lefty loosy) lock located on the left side Chuck and key Make sure gears between chuck and key lock together The chuck and key tighten and loosen manually Clearance hole must be aligned with drill bit table rolls and moves up and down

19 Drill press Hold wood down when drilling hole
Use right hand to turn on and off machine For small pieces of wood use cordless and vice Drill bit sizes range from 1/16” and up Use scrap wood if holes being cut are not aligned with the center hole

20 sanders Use for: Do not use for: Belt and disc move counter clockwise
rough sanding Do not use for: CO2 car, chews up Balsa wood very easily small wood pieces metal painted wood Belt and disc move counter clockwise When sanding utilize the entire belt surface area, move piece of wood back and forth at right angle to the belt motion
