Components of fitness for netball Advanced Skills The main rules Core Skills Start and restart of play - Play is started with a centre pass at the beginning of each quarter/half and after each goal scored. The centre pass is taken alternately by the Centre of each team. Ball in and out of play – a side line pass is taken by a player who is allowed in that third of the court Contact – The infringer must stand beside but away from the player taking the penalty pass so as not to impede that player Footwork - A player taking a free pass may not shoot for goal Offside - A player is offside when the player enters a court area not designated for that player’s position. Catch the ball whilst on the move. Perform a chest, overhead, bounce and shoulder pass over a mid-long distances. Mark a player without the ball. Shadow a player and intercept the ball Footwork – stop, land and pivot Dodging Passing - over a short distance Ball handling – catch the ball whilst stationary Shooting - from a stationary position Regulations Components of fitness for netball Cardiovascular endurance – so you can last the full game without tiring Speed – so you can beat an opponent to the ball Agility – so you can quickly move around other players and find space Reaction time – so you can react and get to the ball before your opponent or get rebounds Key vocabulary Playing area – the field of play is divided into two by a half way line. Number of players – maximum numbers per team 9 v 9, including the goalkeeper. Playing equipment – players must wear shin guards. The correct footwear must be worn for the surface of the pitch The ball – a size 4 ball should be used for U12 Start and restart of play - A kick-off is taken at the centre of the playing area to start the game and after a goal has been scored. Ball in and out of play – a throwing is taken Footwork – landing on one or both feet simultaneously when receiving the ball Pivoting – Rotating yourself on the ball of your landing foot Dodging – move one way and then sprint in the opposite direction Shooting – pushing the ball upwards into the net. Passing – throwing the ball to a team mate Opponent – a player who you are playing against
