MULTIPLE INTELLIGENCES

Howard Gardner Developed 8 learning styles models explain people's preferred ways to learn and develop Initially developed his ideas and theory on multiple intelligences as a contribution to psychology, however Gardner's theory was soon embraced by education, teaching and training communities.

Verbal-Linguistic Word Smart words and language, written and spoken; retention, interpretation and explanation of ideas and information via language, understands relationship between communication and meaning Especially like storytelling and creative writing

Logical-Mathematical Number Smart logical thinking, detecting patterns, scientific reasoning and deduction; analyze problems, perform mathematical calculations, understands relationship between cause and effect towards a tangible outcome or result Shown by skill in arithmetic & science Find patterns & connect to facts Suggestions for Teachers: use of graphic organizers, showing relationships

Musical Music Smart musical ability, awareness, appreciation and use of sound; recognition of tonal and rhythmic patterns, understands relationship between sound and feeling Rhythms & sounds

Bodily-Kinesthetic Body Smart body movement control, manual dexterity, physical agility and balance; eye and body coordination Moving the body through space Athletes and dancers, those skilled in crafts Suggestions for Teachers: hands-on activities, manipulatives

Spatial-Visual Picture Smart visual and spatial perception; interpretation and creation of visual images; pictorial imagination and expression; understands relationship between images and meanings, and between space and effect Drawing & construction Learns through color and drawing

Interpersonal People Smart perception of other people's feelings; ability to relate to others; interpretation of behavior and communications; understands the relationships between people and their situations, including other people Suggestions for teachers: group work, discussions, skits

Intrapersonal Self Smart self-awareness, independence, personal objectivity, the capability to understand oneself, one's relationship to others and the world, and one's own need for, and reaction to change designate quiet areas, independent practice, journals

Naturalistic Nature Smart Understand natural world Likes outdoors bring the outdoors in

There is no right or wrong, good or bad How you grasp a concept: A person who is strong musically and weak numerically will be more likely to develop numerical and logical skills through music, and not by being bombarded by numbers alone. A person who is weak spatially and strong numerically, will be more likely to develop spatial ability if it is explained and developed by using numbers and logic, and not by asking them to pack a suitcase in front of an audience. A person who is weak bodily and physically and strong numerically might best be encouraged to increase their physical activity by encouraging them to learn about the mathematical and scientific relationships between exercise, diet and health, rather than forcing them to box or play rugby.

Activity Decide on a topic taught to 4-6 year olds: Brainstorm two activities for each M.I. that would enable the child to learn best. High school ex: Money Skills Unit Verbal- read about it ways people use money. logical mathematical- charts of saving, counting money musical- sing song about money
