Reading – the key to accessing all areas of the curriculum! Reading is taught mainly through guided reading and 1:1 support. Reading books which have all been read are changed when your child puts them in the reading box in the classroom. Please ensure that you comment in your child’s reading record each time – it’s so we know they have actually read. Please try to read with your child a little each day and encourage some independent reading also. Please send book bags into school every day.

Letters and Sounds (Phonics) A daily 20 minute session focussing on phonics Real sounds in words Spelling patterns, whole sounds and key words Blending and segmenting for reading and writing Year 1 Phonics Screening Check – do not panic! An additional meeting will be held later in the year

PE Tuesday and Wednesday PE kit to be kept in school Please ensure everything is named! Black shorts and white t-shirt for indoor PE Black jogging bottoms and trainers for outdoor PE Getting colder – hoody or sweatshirt would be ideal No earrings to be worn on PE days. Children to bring and apply their own plasters.

Homework Is brought home each Friday in a blue book. Please help your child to complete it and return it by Thursday unless a different date is stated on the top of the homework sheet. Various tasks, e.g. games, worksheets, practising skills, solving real problems. Reading Children will be given spellings every Friday and will be tested on the following Friday.

How You Can Help Please leave your child at the Year 1 gate when the bell goes. Please ensure that your child is in school on time. Try to ensure regular bedtimes. Please try to avoid holidays during term time. Please talk to us (e.g. medical conditions/personal issues). Sue Cox (Learning Mentor) is also a point of support for any changes at home. Ask your child about their day. We NEVER do ‘nothing’! Please celebrate your children’s achievements. If possible could you order your child’s dinner at home. Please ensure your child only brings water into school.

Thank you for your time. Any questions feel free to speak to one of the team. Our doors are always open, please come and chat to us at any point in the year!
