General Art Notes   Art- is the process or product of deliberately arranging elements in way to affect the senses or emotions. Artistic Style- The way an individual artist or a group of artists express themselves. Aesthetic experience- A deep involvement or intense reaction to a work of art. Aesthetic Judgment- Values used in judging a work of art involving reasons for finding a work of art beautiful or satisfying. Content- the message in a work of art. Subject- the object, figure, portrait or landscape created by an artist. Usually what is the recognizable element. Medium- the material used in the production of art. Example: color pencil, water color paint, glass, metal to name just a few. Composition- The arrangement of elements in a work of art.   

Elements of Art In art, you have line, shape, form, space, texture, value and color. Artists manipulate these elements; mix them with the principles of design and compose and/ or create a piece of art.   Principles of Design The set of rules or guidelines of art that are to be considered when considering the impact of a piece of artwork. They are combined with the elements of art I the production of art. The principles are: Movement, unity, variety, balance, emphasis, contrast, proportion and pattern or rhythm. Contour Line Drawing- A simple out-line drawing that utilizes various types of lone; thick, thin, dark, light, to create the image being drawn. Value – An element of art that describes the lightness or darkness of a tone or color. Thumbnail sketches- Small practice drawings. Positive Space- Shapes or forms that are surrounded by empty space. Negative Space- The empty space that surrounds an object or form. Design- The organization or arrangement of elements, i.e. (elements of art) in a work of art. Symbol- Something that stands for or represents something else.
