Why does Shakespeare emphasise that it is a hot day? (L2) What does the banter between Benvolio and Mercutio reveal to the audience? How does Mercutio respond to Tybalt’s polite greeting? (L39) What is significant about Romeo’s entrance? How does Tybalt expect Romeo to react to him? (L59-60) How would the characters on stage react to Romeo’s ‘submission’? Why do you think Mercutio chooses to fight Tybalt? Why does Mercutio curse both families – ‘houses’? What does Romeo realise after Mercutio dies? How has he changed since meeting Juliet? Tybalt calls Romeo ‘boy’, what does this reveal about his attitude?
