Volume Notes 8/27/19

Volume The amount of space something occupies. The basic unit for measuring volume is the cubic meter (m3). We will most often use centimeters (cm3) Milliliters (mL) is another unit we use to measure volume. 1 mL = 1 cm3

Measuring Volume of Rectangular Solids Volume = length x width x height V=l x w x h We measure in centimeters so our volume will be measured in cm3.

Measuring the Volume of Liquids When measuring the volume of a liquid we use a graduated cylinder. Meniscus: the curved surface of a liquid in a tube. Always measure to the meniscus for an accurate reading. We measure in mL.

Measuring the Volume of Irregular Solids To measure irregular solids we use the WATER DISPLACEMENT METHOD. Water displacement method: use a graduated cylinder with a set volume and add the object. The difference in volume from the initial measurement and the final measurement is the volume of the object. We measure in mL.
