1 Finding Volume!!

2 What is Volume? Volume- A measure of the size of something in three-dimensional space Volume Measures: Solid Liquid Gas

3 Volume of a Solid Measured in meters
Given in cubic units, such as cubic meters, cubic centimeters, or cubic millimeters. Formula of a box-shaped object: Length X Width X Height

4 Activity On a half sheet of Paper:
With a partner, find 2 box-shaped solids in the room to measure with a ruler. Write down what the object is Write down the units of the length, width, and height of the object Calculate and write down the volume of each item

5 Volume of a Liquid Measured in Liters
Given in units such as Liter (L) or milliliter (mL) Measured using graduated cylinder **Fun Fact: Lake Erie, the smallest of the Great Lakes, has a volume of approximately 483 trillion liters of water (483,000,000,000,000L)

6 What is a Meniscus? A Meniscus is the curve at a liquid’s surface by which one measures the volume of a liquid. To measure volume accurately, you must measure from the bottom of the meniscus!

7 Volume of Irregularly Shaped Objects
Determined by the volume of liquid that the object displaces or “moves out of the way” Things that have volume cannot share the same space

8 - Volume of water started at 4.8 mL
- After toy was put in, volume of water was at 5.6 mL - Therefore, you would do: 5.6mL – 4.8mL = .8 mL So, the volume of the toy is .8 mL

9 Because the toy dinosaur is a solid, we must express his units in cm3, not in mL
1 mL = 1 cm3 Therefore, the volume of the toy dinosaur is .8 cm3 (.8 mL = .8 cm3)
