WHERE TO FROM HERE? In the final year of your schooling career. Have you thought about what’s next?

Leaving School? What comes to mind when you think about leaving school?

BRAINSTORM: How you are feeling about the changes this year, and next year are going to bring? We’re going to do some brainstorming about your ideas and feelings about next year as well as what you’re thinking about doing next.

TRANSITION FROM SCHOOL TO POST SCHOOL FEELINGS CONSEQUENCES IDEAS NEGATIVE 😟😟 POSITIVE 😀😀 POSITIVE NEGATIVE Use these three areas to help you brainstorm. Make sure you think about each aspect.

Share some of your ideas and feelings with a partner. You do not need to share everything that you have written down, only share what you feel comfortable with. Try to share some of the positive things and some of the negative things that you are feeling.

CHANGE POSITIVES NEGATIVES Potential of something better Creation of new opportunities Personal growth Potential of new relationships Learning Strength NEGATIVES Fear of the unknown Leaving people you love behind Leaving what you know and enjoy Uncertainty

DEALING WITH CHANGE Different people deal with change in different ways. Certain behaviours are more healthy and certain are less healthy in the long run. Consider your family / culture and the way that it deals with change: Is there a celebration or occasion to mark the change? Do people talk about it or do they keep quiet about it? Do people discuss their fears or only the positive aspects about the change? Discuss some of these ideas as a class. Encourage different ideas and different ways of dealing with change. Explain that some ways are healthier in the long run.

DEALING WITH CHANGE Consider and research your options Ask questions about things you are unsure of Set achievable goals Anticipate the positive and the negative in the change Positive thinking and positive framing Consider your support and what you will do when facing some of the negative aspects of the change Ensure you have a positive lifestyle and have good stress management techniques in place; choose things that are sustainable Speak to somebody you trust about the change and what you are afraid and excited about Ask students to individually select one of the bullets and explain what it means in their own words. It is important that learners understand and know the role positive attitudes play in dealing with change. Speak to startegies and allow learners to write down THREE strategies to deal with change. ( Keep in mind preparation for final examination)

Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change. Stephen Hawking Explain that change is inevitable in the world and their success will in part be determined by their ability to deal with that change

ACTION PLAN “Dear Future Me…” Give learners a copy of the 10 Step Action Plan PDF to read through. Check that learners understand each of the 10 elements and then introduce the idea of them designing an action plan relating to their lifestyle over the coming year.

PLANNING FOR EACH ASPECT OF LIFE CAREER / FINANCE PHYSICAL HEALTH SOCIAL PLANNING FOR EACH ASPECT OF LIFE MENTAL & EMOTIONAL HEALTH SPIRITUAL Explain that a good action plan will address each of the 5 key dimensions of life. Ask learners to give an example of a specific goal relating to each of the 5 dimensions. Have the learners write down a list of the 5 dimensions as they will need to refer to this list when writing their letters. Use the September 2015 CAT (Q4) as consolidation and application exercise.

ACTION PLAN “Dear Future Me…” IN YOUR LETTER, DISCUSS: What you are anticipating will happen in the transition to post school – how are you anticipating feeling? How you think you should deal with the different feelings. Some of the difficulties you think you will face. THEN OUTLINE: At least one specific goal for each of the 5 life dimensions And write down your action plan as to how you plan on achieving each goal.
