b. Results of the Enlightenment Optimistic view of state … born a ‘blank slate’ (tabula rasa)  enhance edu. Use reason to problem solve Rule by edu. elite (not relig.)

2. Great Awakening: religious revivalist movement designed to renew commitment to the Church Emphasized personal experience of the common man Jonathan Edwards’ “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” = example of emotional sermon Rejected –Enlightenment view that everything in the world could be explained by natural law and logic

The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much as one holds a spider, or some loathsome insect over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked. What EMOTIONAL language stands out to you?

His wrath towards you burns like fire; he looks upon you as worthy of nothing else but to be cast into the fire.

You are ten thousand times more abominable in his eyes than the most hateful venomous serpent is in ours.

You have offended him infinitely more than ever a stubborn rebel did his prince; and yet it is nothing but his hand that holds you from falling into the fire every moment. Why is this sermon entitles “sinners in the hands of an angry god”?

There is no other reason to be given, why you have not dropped into hell since you arose in the morning, but that God's hand has held you up What is John Edward’s message… what does he want his listeners to do?

d. Results of the Great Awakening Pessimistic view of state … born a sinner (enhance religious edu.) Use of emotion to problem solve NO elite – rule by the people
