1 Based on what we’ve just discussed…
Decide what the THEME or main message of “The Minister’s Black Veil” is. Find a strong piece of textual evidence to back your opinion Your textual evidence must be either: An example of connotative language or imagery An example of figurative language Write a paragraph using the CQC format to defend your answer.

2 CQC Review CONTEXT – Give the reader context for your answer. Introduce the author, title of the piece, and set up the example you about to introduce. QUOTE – Cite your textual evidence with the author’s last name and the page number in parenthesis (Author #) COMMENT – Explain how your textual evidence actually supports what you said it does.

3 Title and author Example C: In his sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God,” Johnathan Edwards uses strong figurative language to deliver his message – that all sinners must repent and be saved - to his audience. This is especially obvious though his use of metaphor. For example, he writes, Q: “The God that holds you over the pit of hell, much in the same way as one holds a spider, or some loathsome insect, over the fire, abhors you, and is dreadfully provoked…you are ten thousand times more abominable in His eyes than the most hateful venomous serpent is in ours” (Edwards 87). C: Here, Edwards compares his parishioners to “insects” and “serpents” in order to describe to his listeners the disgust God feels towards their sin, and to make them feel impure and evil. Through his use of a strong emotional image, his listeners become convinced that they must purify themselves and be saved. I’ve explained what I’m going to introduce and why My quote is actually a metaphor like I said it would be! Notice how I come back full circle and explain HOW the example helps to deliver the message! Notice how I pull words from my quote to tie everything together Notice how I explain the reason I picked the quote
