2 The Great Awakening During the early 1700s, many colonists feared they had lost the desire to practice their religion 1. This religious movement was called the Great Awakening 2. To revive people’s religious spirit, preachers went from town to town holding outdoor “revival” meetings

3 Men of the Great Awakening Jonathon Edwards –Became one of the best-known preachers –3. He terrified listeners with images of God’s anger but promised they could be saved

4 Men of the Great Awakening George Whitefield –Inspired colonists to help others –4. Drew thousands of people with his sermons and raised funds to start a home for orphans

5 Conflicts from the Great Awakening Created Change 5. In communities, the Great Awakening would cause religious group to argue and split apart. The Great Awakening caused people to join other Protestant group such as Baptist

Life, liberty, property –He claimed that people create government to protect their natural rights  If a government fails in this duty, people have the right to change it –10. He challenged that kings had a “God-given” right to rule

Men of Enlightenment Benjamin Franklin –American Enlightenment figure Thomas Jefferson –Author of the Declaration of Independence –Used Enlightenment ideas in his declaration  Stated in the Declaration that “all men are created equal” and that people have certain God-given rights-Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
