Summarizing Information - Notes Writing Practice Summarizing Information - Notes

Summarizing Information What is a summary? Summaries present the most important elements of an item or event in a concise, detailed way. A summary is an account that provides only the most important details. A summary does NOT attempt to capture the tone or style of the original text. Instead, a summary attempts to reveal what the text is about only. Summary Guidelines A summary should recount events in chronological order, and use transitions to clarify the order of events. A summary should include only facts, not opinions or comments. Summarizing Information

Summarizing Information Tips when writing summaries: Use precise language Make your summary accurate and exact to the original text. Do NOT add in items that were not originally in the text. Choose supporting details Use details from the text to help reveal and support the main ideas of the original text that you are summarizing. Use transitions Use transitions to make connections and relationships among the details clear and easy to follow. Summarizing Information
