Who we are…. Public land-, sea-, space-grant institution 12,500 undergraduate students 2,500 graduate students Over 2,000 courses in 100 majors 740 full-time faculty Broad array of professional, research, and outreach programs University of New Hampshire, Durham Campus

What we do…

To update you on our efforts to motivate our faculty to think creatively proceed proactively assume risks To describe our passage through the classic bottleneck Why are we here? To report on the eggs we broke and the omelets we made too little time too few resources

Last years cast of characters… Our faculty constituents Instructional Development Center (IDC) Instructional Technology theory and practices

without toppling any eggs, without breaking any eggs, while motivating them to think creatively thus drawing them into the IDC bottle. What were our goals? Getting faculty into the bottle…

What we learned…. Faculty are risk-takers Exhaustive training can be inhibiting Training can be perceived as an obstacle Excessive ease-of-use can be counterproductive Support trumps skills Primary inhibitor is…… TIME

Encourage faculty to explore broad possibilities of instructional technology Promote an awareness and appreciation of instructional design theory Allow faculty to concentrate on pedagogical issues and content Provide project-based design and development support Reduce the need for large investments of faculty time What we set out to do -

Our goals - Project-driven instructional design teams Clearly articulate best practices Summer instructional technology event Faculty presence in the IDC Student mentoring program for faculty Create

Where wed like to go - Faculty IT Fellowship Blackboard Enterprise Edition Expansion of Summer Institute Closer working relationship with faculty More aggressive promotion

Ideally, we seek just the right combination of these programs and services – one that will encourage, but not coerce engage, but not intimidate support, but not direct. Our goal is to generate just enough heat through our programs and services to draw faculty into the instructional technology vision we have for the campus.
