Integrating Information Literacy for the 21st Century: Reaching Out to Faculty and Students by Adopting Web 2.0 Principles Educause Learning Initiatives (ELI) January 20-22, 2009 Wednesday, January 21, 2009, 1:30 p.m. - 3:30 p.m., Curacao 1-4 Session Type: Project Briefing -- Content Level: Introductory Corinne Bishop, Information Literacy Librarian, University of Central Florida Patricia LeClaire, Instructional Designer, University of Central Florida Francisca Yonekura, New Media Lead, University of Central Florida Project Briefing Participants will learn how teams from the University of Central Florida (UCF) are addressing information literacy for the 21st century by adopting principles inherent in Web 2.0 that most students and faculty have come to expect. Presenters will provide details about the online information literacy modules, which are being developed as a collaborative project by teams from the Library and Course Development and Web Services. Participants will also learn how Obojobo, the online learning system developed at UCF, is used to create and share modules. It is often assumed that technically sophisticated students are proficient in information competencies through their use of the Internet and popular search engines. However, course assignments frequently reflect problems such as plagiarism, inaccuracy in evaluating credible sources, and difficulty in locating academic sources. The online modules project provides supplemental resources that faculty can use to integrate information literacy into the curriculum. Each module includes content, practice with feedback, and an assessment component to determine whether students have learned the information literacy skill being taught. The briefing will include details about the instructional development process, examples of modules, discussion of technologies used, and a module demonstration. Log on to (faculty and student access) for more information. "Copyright Corinne Bishop, Patricia LeClaire, Francisca Yonekura, This work is the intellectual property of the authors.
