Facilitating excellence in research at UIC Transparency NIH / NSF - Reporting Quarterly reporting Total amount of funds received Amount of those funds that were obligated and expended Evaluation of the completion status An estimate of the number of jobs created or retained

Facilitating excellence in research at UIC NIH / NSF If the agency finds through reporting that the funds are not being spent and/or the project is not progressing, the agency may stray from its usual culture and potentially pull back the award to direct it to an award where it will be spent.

Facilitating excellence in research at UIC Campus Initiatives Chancellor convened working group in early February to evaluate ARRA opportunities OVCR convened taskforce to track all Federal agencies and announcements concerning ARRA Creation of clearinghouse website for information sharing and communication Communication with faculty, Associate Deans for Research and Washington

Facilitating excellence in research at UIC Research Development Services (RDS) ARRA related proposal development technical assistance services –Prepare PIs for conference calls/meetings with program officers –Budget review and development –Editorial review of proposal narrative –We do not need to have the complete proposal and will review sections as they are completed by the PI

Facilitating excellence in research at UIC Office of Research Services (ORS) ORS is amending their submission process as necessary in order to accommodate the influx of proposals –Please visit the OVCR Recovery Page for specific details OMB is aware that grants.gov is experiencing significant delays and has asked each agency to identify alternative methods for accepting grant applications to reduce the demand on grants.gov. –As more information on this becomes available we will adjust our processes as necessary

Facilitating excellence in research at UIC Other FY09 budget – NIH base budget: proposed 3% increase – NSF base budget: proposed 7% increase FY10 proposed budget continues emphasis on science, technology and healthcare ARRA funding of existing proposals in the pipeline should improve competitiveness of new proposals submitted through normal mechanisms
