FILM & LITERATURE OF MICE AND MEN

*awry: unexpectedly; off-track DAILY JOURNAL (4 June) The title of this book comes from a line in a Robert Burns poem: “the best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry*”. How does this relate to the characters in the story? *awry: unexpectedly; off-track

LITERATURE CIRCLE In your group, share the notes you took for the 2nd part of Of Mice and Men. Listen to others’ contributions & feel free to add ideas of your own Add this question to your discussion: Why do George and Candy have to give up on the idea of their ranch after Lennie kills Curley’s wife? Clip 1

FORESHADOWING In fiction, foreshadowing refers to a warning or clue about something that will occur later in the story. In Of Mice and Men, how does Steinbeck foreshadow the events of ending of the story? e.g. Lennie and George had to leave Weed before the story starts because of an incident where Lennie grabbed a woman’s dress & wouldn’t let her go.

CLIPS Watch the clip from Of Mice and Men. Discuss Questions: How are the deaths of Candy’s dog & Lennie related? Why did they both have to die? Was it ‘just’ for George to kill Lennie? Clip 2
