1 The Hound of the Baskervilles Pt 3
Film and literature

2 Today’s Journal Prompt (27 Sept)
Some people believe the characters in Hound are complex; others think they’re simple. Which do you believe? Why?

3 Literature Circle In your group, share the notes you took for the 1st part of The Hound of the Baskervilles Listen to others’ contributions & feel free to add ideas of your own Add this question to your discussion: Holmes & Watson are 2 of the most vivid characters in fiction – ppl have some confusion about whether they really existed or not. What other characters are so vivid many might think they really existed?

4 Sherlock: The Hounds of Baskerville
Watch the clip from the 2015 series, Sherlock This scene introduces some characters from Hound. How have they been changed? What effect does this have on the telling of the story? Stapleton Frankland Barrymore (Mycroft Holmes: Sherlock’s brother; important figure in UK gov’t)

5 Detective Stories Detective stories usually follow a plot formula (simple, tightly structured) The detective gathers clues, formulates a hypothesis and is distracted by red herrings along the way to solving the case Discussion: What are some red herrings A.C. Doyle presents Holmes & Watson in H of B? How is Holmes like/unlike a typical detective?

6 Themes & Symbols Below the surface of a story are the deeper ideas the writer (or director) wants us to know. These deeper ideas may be found in… THEMES: General topics, not specifically about char., setting or plot SYMBOLS: Objects representing something else Caduceus – symbol of the medical profession

7 Themes & Symbols in The Hound of the Baskervilles
What themes, motifs & symbols can you identify in Hound of the Baskervilles? Journal about this at home. Themes (general topics) Real vs supernatural Symbols (special objects) The hound

8 Film Clips: Sherlock Watch the following clips from the series Sherlock & discuss the questions with your partner Clip #1: In this scene, Holmes, Watson & Henry Knight meet the hound. What does Holmes mean at the end when he says, “I didn’t see anything”? How is this different from Holmes’ first encounter with the hound in the book? Clip #2: In the book, Holmes sends Henry Baskerville out to lure the hound. In this clip, it’s Watson. Do you feel more sympathy for the “victim” since it’s Watson rather than Henry Baskerville? Why might the director have made this change?

9 Wrap-up Next class we will have a “projects day” where I’ll introduce Assignment #1 We’ll start the next unit (‘Flowers for Algernon’ / Limitless) next Thurs – I’ll upload the story & reading assignment by the end of week I’ll also collect journals on Tuesday
