2 Before Reading Ch. 4 “When Candy spoke they (Lennie and George) both jumped as though they had been caught doing something reprehensible.” (59) What had Lennie and George just been discussing? Why might that be considered reprehensible? (Think about the diction that Steinbeck uses. What does it imply about George and Lennie’s dream? “I oughtta of shot that dog myself, George. I shouldn’t oughtta of let no stranger shoot my dog.” (61) Why should Candy have shot his own dog?

3 Steinbeck often describes Lennie using animal terms: “Lennie covered his face with huge paws and bleated with terror.” (63) What does this description tell us about Lennie? What does the fight between Curley and Lennie tell us about Lennie’s strength? His control? Now that we’ve finished Chapter 3, can you tell me what Curley’s wife’s name is? What is Steinbeck saying about women?
