Introduction to Library Resources for Business Students Amy Jansen UConn Library August 2017

Getting Started Your portal to the library’s electronic resources Visit the library website: http://lib.uconn.edu/ Your portal to the library’s electronic resources Review our Business databases UConn has a variety of article and specialized databases: http://rdl.lib.uconn.edu/subjects/1871;all. Take a look at the Business Subject Guides General business research guide (libguide): http://guides.lib.uconn.edu/business Speak to a Librarian via chat (highlighted in screenshot above), or contact me directly at amy.jansen@uconn.edu.

What can you do from the library website? Search the library catalog for e- books. Locate a journal or news article by title/author or search for articles on a certain topic. Locate information or data in a specialized business or research database. View online research guides which are specifically devoted to business subjects and courses. Place a request for a book or article that UConn does not own (via our Interlibrary Services link). Get help with citations and access RefWorks (online citation manager) Find Help/Chat link and connect with a librarian

How do I find an E-book? You can use the Library Catalog to search our collection of electronic books, multimedia, and journals. Signing in with your NetID is important. Among other things, it allows you to request books from different campuses and view full- text e-books & articles. The UConn library website offers a single search, you can search for journals, articles, books, etc. from the same spot. Enter your search words and narrow your search using the filters (“Refine my results”) on the right side.

How do I find a specific article? Again, you can search for an article, book, dvd, journal, and more, all from the same place. If you know the title or author of your article, enter the words. For an article title search, add quotes for a more effective search. Click the “Full text available” link, which will bring you to the article wherever it resides among our electronic resources. In the example above, this article can be found in EBSCOhost Business Source Complete, a business database.

Best Bets for Business Articles & News ABI/INFORM Includes Wall Street Journal, Financial Times (1 month delay) Source for scholarly, peer-reviewed articles Business Source Complete Includes Harvard Business Review Factiva Source for business news Wall Street Journal, Financial Times (1 month delay), Barron’s Includes Dow Jones Interactive and Reuters Business Briefing Lexis Nexis Business: business news, plus company profiles, SEC filings, industry reports. Most of the business databases mentioned now capture relevant news & offer it linked from your company profile or report.

Where can I find the Harvard Business Review (HBR)? To find a specific journal at UConn, take a look at our E-Journals list. Do a title search from here. You might see multiple entries for the same journal – we still have some print copies of select journals at Babbidge Library in Storrs. Select the entry that shows Online Access. (There may be more than one.) The Online Access link will take you into the journal’s record, where you can browse issues.

Harvard Business Review (HBR), cont. Most journals reside in specific databases or platforms, and HBR can be found in Business Source Complete. The issue links on the right side will take you directly into the journal’s issues & articles in Business Source Complete. HBR does not allow direct links for certain articles. If you get an error that "The full text cannot be viewed from a persistent link." you can do a search for your article using the article title, author, and Harvard Business Review, within Business Source Complete.

Finding Company Information UConn’s Business Subject Guide can get you started with where to look: (http://guides.lib.uconn.edu/business) Hoover’s Company Profiles: now found in Business Market Research Collection, a directory- type database with company information Thomson ONE Banker & Mergent Online: good source of more detailed financial information PrivCo: private company information, more difficult to find in other databases

Management & Corporate Culture ABI/INFORM Global or Business Source Complete: search for news or management analyses of your company Company websites – another source to familiarize yourself with a company’s vision and mission statement Annual Reports can be a useful piece of information Just be aware that the website is a public relations tool for the company.

Financial Info and Analyses Mergent Online is a solid source of financial info. Can find financial data for last 15 years and recent SEC filings. For 10-K, 10-Q, and other SEC filings, in addition to Mergent, you can also use EDGAR from the SEC website. “Company Financials” tab has income statements, balance sheets, ratios Compare companies from the “Competitors” tab, can customize a spreadsheet that compares the financial data of your company’s major competitors (you can use the preselected competitors or select your own)

Financial Information, CONT. Thomson ONE Banker and Standard & Poor’s NetAdvantage are also good sources for financial info.

Marketing Mintel Reports: good source of market research reports, a favorite for students IBISWorld: industry, company, and economic reports, includes marketing information Passport GMID: market research for consumer industries, Main elements in Passport: 1) Industry reports 2) Country reports 3) Global market and consumer reports 4) Company profiles 5) Commentary & Analysis BCC Research and Gartner are sources for specialized market data SRDS offers media rates and advertising data

Click on Equity Pricing tab after locating your company’s profile. Yahoo Finance also has historical stock values - http://finance.yahoo.com/. Search by company name or ticker symbol in the top search box. Open your company’s profile, then click “Historical Data” from the top menu.

How do I find help with citing sources? In academic writing, it is VERY important to properly cite your sources, as well as to consider the authenticity and accuracy of your sources. Consult our Business Citation Research Guide, http://guides.lib.uconn.edu/business/citingbizsources Chicago Harvard Business School MLA APA

Summary Get started by becoming familiar with the library website, business databases, and online research guides that are available to you. Find a company’s profile & basic info in Business Market Research Collection, Thomson or PrivCo. Check out the management and culture of a company or industry in ABI/INFORM or Business Source Complete. Dig deeper & analyze a company’s finances in Mergent or Thomson. Locate global marketing data and information in Mintel or Passport GMID. Look for stock info in Thomson, Value Line, or Mergent. Scan for recent company or industry news in Factiva, or in article databases like ABI/INFORM Global or Business Source Complete. Cite your sources carefully when completing projects or papers. Consult your syllabus or check with your instructor before adopting a certain citation style. Most business schools use the Harvard Business School or the Chicago style guides.
