Lesson 3 - 5: Skill Building- How to Analyse Secondary Research

Skills

What is research and why do we do it? RECAP: What is research and why do we do it? What? Research can be information in many different forms. Facts, figures, maps, quotes, images etc Why? To get answers to questions To increase our understanding To learn more about something

How to find good quality research RURU

Research Relevant Up to date Reliable Useful Whether you have collected the information yourself in a survey ... Your research should always have these qualities RURU ...or whether it’s information that already exists on the Internet Checking for RURU will save you time later

Time to analyse By now, you should have some general reading to do – you have collected some information on the industry you are researching as a possible career. Now we have to understand what this information says and how it can support your project

What does analysis mean? “Being able to break knowledge down into parts and show how they fit together, so you can ‘analyse’, ’explain’ and ‘compare’…..” Kirton, “Brilliant Academic Writing” Pearson 2012 Investigating data, trends and information to make decisions What the information means to YOU and YOUR project

Pair activity Jessica Spencer is considering a career in the restaurant industry. She has decided to open a restaurant in the local area but she doesn't know much about the industry. From the research she has found, she would like your help to understand what is happening in the industry now for example what are the current trends. TASK: Using the news article given, complete questions A – C on the worksheet to help analyse what is going on. You will have 15 minutes to complete this activity and prepare to present back what you have analysed https://uk.finance.yahoo.com/news/uk-restaurant-industry-000000282.html All students will get a copy of the same news article and complete the document that reflects what is in their work booklet. This will hopefully get students to understand what skills are needed when using research from the internet. At the end of the 10 minutes, get the students to discuss as a class what they have analysed. Please get these students to use the paper copy UK restaurants in the Welsh Bacc letter trays (located in the area between the corridor and the office).

Continue with the Secondary Research Activity For Lessons 3 – 5: Continue to complete your Skill Building- Secondary Research work booklets using your analysis skills you have developed. Don’t forget to complete the speech bubbles to help you write out your paragraph

Possible Sentence Starters   1. I found a piece of research about ........... (explain if its a news story, graph, statistics.etc). 2. I found the research on this website ........(put source in from the Internet) 3. The research tells me that ........... 4. This makes me think that ........ 5. Therefore I can see that.................. (try to relate back to your project)

Continue with the Secondary Research Activity For Lessons 3 – 5: Continue to complete your Skill Building- Secondary Research work booklets using your analysis skills you have developed. Here are some ideas.... Recent industry news Statistics – such as industry turnover (how much the industry is making) Which jobs require qualifications and why Information about the different types of roles How can you progress in the industry? Any trends happening within the industry that could help with your career? The negative aspects of the industry Remember to pick out the key points – what do they mean to you and this project.

Homework – FOR NEXT LESSON Find a piece of secondary research that that you can use to complete your RURU booklets. For an example: Print a news article / industry news
