What is open access? “Open access is about making the products of research freely accessible to all” - HEFCE Why do we need to know about it? Funder requirements REF submission (REF2020) requirements University research strategy to improve REF outcomes

How can you do this? Green Time not money Published in an electronic “green” journal which allows repository deposit Not accessible immediately without a journal subscription - embargoes Deposit pre-publication version in a repository – “self-archiving”

How can you do this? Gold Hybrid Money not time Free immediate electronic access – no embargoes Authors (often institutions) usually required to pay Article Processing Charges (APCs) Hybrid Traditional Subscription and typically Gold articles in same journal
