Presentation transcript:

Domestic Policy: Nixon & Ford During the Nixon Administration, the economies of the world grew more interdependent (tied together) Foreign goods (Japan/Western Europe) compete with American manufactured products

Stagnant economic growth, high unemployment, and inflation of prices led to a condition known as stagflation.

Nixon attempted to bring the economy/inflation under control through wage and price control.

Arab Oil Embargo caused a surge in the price of oil/gasoline effecting the presidencies of Nixon, Ford, and Carter.

Odd- Even Rationing license plates having an odd number at the end -purchased gasoline on odd-numbered days vehicles with even-numbered license plates purchased fuel on even-numbered days

Continued many of Nixon’s domestic policies. FORD ADMINISTRATION After Nixon was forced to resign, Ford attempted to heal the wounds caused by the Watergate Scandal. Continued many of Nixon’s domestic policies.

Inflation/unemployment continued to rise Narrowly defeated by Jimmy Carter in the election of 1976, Fords controversial presidential pardon of Nixon for Watergate crimes contributed to his election defeat.

FOREIGN POLICY: NIXON & FORD Détente with Soviet Union (USSR). Included Nuclear Disarmament talks (SALT), presidential summits with leaders of the Soviet Union and China

Nixon normalized relations with communist China & became the 1st US President to visit Communist China. The US formally recognized China (exchanged ambassadors) in 1979 under the Carter Administration

As tensions ended in Asia, violence increased in the Middle East. Nixon/Ford supported Israel in conflicts involving Arab nations. Ford continued Nixon’s policy of détente, continued arms talks with the Soviets.

Ford continued support of Israel in the Middle East (Israeli victory of 6 day war in 1967 and the Yom Kippur war of 1973 greatly increase Israel's territory US influence attempted to promote peace).
