4 The Environment Silent Spring – book written by Rachel Carson that kick started the environmental movement Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)– agency in charge of enforcing pollution standards Clean Air and Water Act (1970) – act that established standards for emission and contaminants in the water

5 Nixon’s Foreign Policy
Realpolitik: a practical approach stressing national interest rather than ethical goals (promoting liberty/democracy) Means the end more important than the means Détente: a policy, which attempted to relax or ease tensions between US and USSR during Nixon’s administration No formal policy – just agreement made between Nixon and new Soviet premier Brezhnev EX: SALT I and SALT II Nixon Doctrine: US is 3rd world’s partner, not protector

7 China Growing split between China and the Soviets
This makes China attractive to the U.S so in Nixon visits China Full diplomatic relations come in 1979

8 Salt II Nixon visits Moscow to sign agreements on trade and the limitation of nuclear arms called SALT I SALT II (1979) – agreement between the U.S. and Soviet Union to limit nuclear missiles and ballistic missiles

9 US and the Middle East US becomes the main player in Middle Eastern affairs, not the Soviet Union. Six Day War (1967): between Israel and Egypt, Jordan, and Syria. Israel offers to give up lands in exchange for peace but Arab states won’t acknowledge Israel Yom Kippur War (1973): Egypt and Syria attack Israel US sends massive shipments of arms to fight assault. In retaliation, Arab states create oil embargo on the U.S.

10 Domestic Policy 1969 – 1st manned mission to the moon by Neil Armstrong on Apollo 11 Respond to environmental movement with limited pesticide use, protections for endangered species, and safeguarding coastal lands. Creates Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

11 Economic Problems Nixon tries to deal with inflation and deficit by cutting government spending and raising interest rates Result: stagflation (stagnation and inflation) Increasing inflation so Nixon shifts and now increases deficit spending Then OPEC boycott raises prices of oil Economy is struggling.

1973, reports suggested that the White House staff broke in to Watergate Hotel (Democrat headquarters) Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein from the Washington Post confirmed that certain officials did break in

14 U.S. v. Nixon United States vs. Nixon (1974) – ruled that Richard Nixon had to turnover Water tapes that had been subpoenaed Nixon turned over the tapes, much of it edited Days later, Nixon resigned and was replaced by vice president Gerald Ford
