ROAD TO WAR

German Aggression Hitler glorified war as a means of restoring German National Pride. This Philosophy led to a policy of expansion Hitler Rebuilt the German Army, in violation of the Treaty of Versailles In 1936, Hitler sent troops into the Rhineland (borders Germany and France) 1938, made Austria part of his Empire, same year forced Czechoslovakia to give Germany the Rhineland.

Appeasement Policy that nations give in to aggressive Demands to maintain peace. Western democracies responded weakly to German Aggression Key Player: Neville Chamberlain (GR Br) Key Event: Munich Conference Why Give In: Do not want to go to War again.

Munich Conference Sept 29, 1938 Meeting of France, Britain, Germany and Italy Attempt to preserve peace Allowed Hitler to take Sudetenland in Czechoslovakia (appeasement) In exchange Hitler would respect Czechs new borders, Less than six months later Hitler sends troops into Czechoslovakia.

Blitzkreig Lightning war involving fast moving airplanes and tanks and a large amount of troops. It took enemies by surprise April 9th 1940, Hitler launched a surprise attack on Denmark and Norway Defeated Denmark in 4 hours Defeated Norway in 2 months
