What is Imagery? Imagery is language that appeals to the senses. (Literature textbook) An image, in its basic sense, is something concrete that appeals to any of the five senses - sight, sound, touch, taste, smell - as well as metaphor, simile, and personification.

For Example … The following examples might describe a stroll on a summer night: Sight - a full moon in a black sky Sound - the chirp of crickets Taste - the tang of a cold glass of lemonade Touch - a warm breeze Smell - freshly mowed grass

Take out a piece of paper … Make a chart like the one below on your own piece of paper (scrap paper is okay): Sight Sound Touch Taste Smell

Now close your eyes … Imagine a Saturday morning ... How do you feel on a Saturday morning, compared to a school day for instance? Think about what you see, hear, touch, taste, and smell on a Saturday morning. Open your eyes. Record two things in each column.

Your Turn to Try “The Way I Play Soccer” by Natasha Niemi Sweat streams down my face, And my skin turns red under the watchful eye of the sun. The sound of cleats pounding the earth is deafening As my enemies charge down the field towards me. I can sense the shooter is going to miss; All at once, the ball collides into my chest. Screams of victory roar across the field. The grass stained, game ball rests Rests lovingly between my two hands.
