4 Metaphor A direct comparison between two different things. Hint: look for was or is The wind was a whip across my frozen cheeks.

5 Details Use specific details:
The weary man laid his heavy head on the pillow. His sad heart broke as he thought of his faithful companion, Rover, dead and buried in the cold, winter ground.

6 Transitions Use transition words to show relationships between description and objects: Next to the flowering dogwood tree stood a tall, dark green pine.
