The Implementation Team 2019 CEAL Cataloging Workshop March 19th, 2019 SACO CJK Funnel Group The Implementation Team 2019 CEAL Cataloging Workshop March 19th, 2019

Agenda Why do we need this new funnel group? The Implementation Team Training plans The online form Examples of new terms to propose: part 1 and part 2 Group discussion

Why do we need this new funnel group? 2018 CEAL Cataloging Workshop: group discussions CJK Demographic and Genre Terms by SAC Subcommittee on Faceted Vocabularies: Lia Contursi (Columbia Law) & Charlene Chou Reasons: Lia’s presentation concerning LC non-topical terms CJK terms missing in LCSH, LCGFT and LCDGT CJK catalogers can propose LC terms even though their institutions do not do SACO proposals. SACO reviewers in their institutions may not be able review CJK terms. The importance of controlled vocabularies for linked data Goal: a joint effort between PS/subject librarians and technical services librarians

The Implementation Team After the 2018 CEAL Cataloging Workshop, Charlene heard from the following colleagues for their participation. Stella Tang from UC Berkeley Lia Contursi from Columbia Law Jia Xu from Yale This project would be joint efforts from our team!  CEAL has a MARC library code-- CaLaCEAL approved by the MARC Office for this SACO funnel project already. Details to work out.

Training plans Janis Young from LC has accepted Charlene’s invitation to provide SACO training for this funnel group. The training sessions would be arranged after this workshop if we receive sufficient support from the CEAL community! Stay tuned for details!

Proposed procedures: two ways Catalogers initiate the proposals after upcoming SACO training sessions Following the same model for NACO and CONSER, a well-trained cataloger can submit a proposal which will be reviewed by a SACO reviewer. The reviewers will be decided later. PS/subject librarians can suggest new ideas through the online suggestion form for catalogers to propose new term in the SACO proposal system for LC to approve. If this term cannot be proposed or disapproved, catalogers will communicate the reasons with colleagues who suggest the ideas. If this term is approved by LC, the cataloger will notify a colleague who suggests this idea. Goals: effective communication and collaboration

The online form is established for comments The online form is available at: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1qKMzwt9cQZaGtyhxhOFURI9jvq7Uyh G--DGvOgzvPgA/edit?usp=sharing This form is for non-catalogers to propose ideas, so CJK catalogers will propose new terms in the SACO proposal system. Please test it and send us your feedback. This would be an important portal for TS and PS to communicate and collaborate!

For citation, choose option 1 or 2 in the dropdown menu.
