Road to Academic Recovery Academic Advising Center

Outline Understand why you were academically disqualified Process for Petitioning to Reinstate Open University Calculate grades needed for reinstatement Strategies for academic success

What is Academic Disqualification? Students academically disqualified when CI and/or CUM GPA falls below the following: Students are dropped from classes; no longer a continuing student Freshmen (29 units or less) 1.50 Sophomore (30 – 59 units) 1.70 Junior (60 – 89 units) 1.85 Senior (90 + units) 1.95 (after having been on academic probation previously), and will lose access to myCI

What if I think my grades were incorrect? Course Grade Appeals 6-step process –initiate by the 7th week of the following semester If grade changes academic standing, you will be reinstated; disqualification removed. Contact records.registration@csuci.edu for grade changes.

Can I appeal? Exceptional Circumstances Conditions outside student’s control Provide documentation Yes Give examples of conditions – (medical, deaths, instable home environment Appeal due within 2 weeks of notification.

How do I get Reinstated? Eliminate grade-point deficiency by completing courses at CI through Open University. Your cumulative and/or CI GPA must be at 2.0. Must remain outside of university for two regular semesters (fall and spring) Petition for Reinstatement must be submitted by published deadline.

How do I get Reinstated? Reinstatement Community College Open University

What is Open University To improve CI GPA Take classes through Open University at CI. Intent to Enroll Not eligible for financial aid Fee is per unit – check with Extended University Have 2 weeks to add or drop classes

What if I cannot afford Open University? If you really want to return to CI: work, save money, & then attend open university Don’t want break from school or don’t live near : attend local community college, meet with Transfer Counselor, and apply to another school

Finding Your GPA If you have access to myCI Go to CI Records Then Student Center If you don’t have access to myCI Email records.registration@csuci.edu for copy Current Academic Summary Overall GPA and CI GPA

Your CI Transcript Click on View my unofficial transcript Then **Unofficial for Advising**

Disqualification Action Plan Fill out the Disqualification Semester Action Plan as you review your transcript Check off factors that affected your academic work last term Use Plan to calculate GPA

Finding the GPA Calculator

Using the GPA Calculator Sign in to myCI

Using the GPA Calculator To figure out what is needed to get a 2.0 GPA Using the GPA Calculator Automated CI GPA & Attempted Units Enter 2.0 for Desired GPA Graded Units for term Check box for CUM GPA If student’s cumulative is lower than campus GPA, check box to include GPA outside of CSUCI

Using the GPA Calculator After Desired GPA & Semester Units noted, Semester GPA noted below If student’s cumulative is lower than campus GPA, check box to include GPA outside of CSUCI

Repeating Courses Courses If repeating course/s, check yes & select Past grade received Make note that students can enter predicted grades, and it will show them it they will meet semester GPA by noting “Not Enough” or “Okay” Semester GPA required to get off of probation; make note on action plan

What If It’s Not Possible to Attain a 2.0 in one semester? Change Graded Units Enrolled in Current Semester Increase to 18, 21, 24 This will help you determine how many classes or semesters it will take to reach a 2.0. Make note of classes you’ll need to take on your Action Plan. Repeat courses Depending on finances, it can take you a few semesters to reach a 2.0.

Repeat/Grade Forgiveness Policy Any course with a grade of C- or lower, or WU or IC may be repeated Only one repeat allowed per course Grade forgiveness applies to courses taken and repeated at CSUCI for up to 12 units Grade received in the repeated/ 2nd attempted course will replace the grade received in the first attempted course.

~ Additional Units Repeated Additional 12 units may be repeated, but grades will not be replaced Failing grades received due to academic dishonesty will not be grade forgiven ~

When Not to Repeat a Class You have changed your major will spend 50% of your time on class – just to get a “C,” and would only have 50% of time left between other classes positive you cannot pass said class even with extra tutoring have already repeated the class once

Conditions for Repeating Classes Required class in your major, and major requires “C” or better You know you could be successful in the class, with ample studying and tutoring do not have to repeat the class with the same professor, (unless he/she is the only one who teaches the class)
