Society of Manufacturing Engineers Grant Making – Grant Seeking Education Foundation Grant Making – Grant Seeking Presented by Juliana Brown Director, SME Education Foundation September 17, 2003

SME Education Foundation Founded in 1979 as a means to transform, shape and enhance the future of manufacturing education and technology curricula in North American colleges and universities

Focus in three areas: * some programs funded by donor endowed funds Grants to colleges and universities for curricula development –funded by SME and donor endowed funds Scholarships – funded by donor endowed funds and some annual gifts Youth Programs * some programs funded by donor endowed funds * STEPS camps – funded by corporate and foundation grants

1996 initiated Manufacturing Education Plan (MEP) Base grant making on addressing industry identified competency gaps Since 1998 awarded over $8M in grants to 34 institutions Annual cycle with volunteer review committee Require industry partners and regional coordination

Science Technology and Engineering Preview Summer camps (STEPS) Technology based youth camp aimed at middle and high school students Grants from corporations and foundations allow SME-EF to work with an academic institution to develop a program for that region Since 1998 SME-EF has received over $1.3M in grants to fund camp programs in 4 states. Over 3000 students have participated. Annual cycle – need advance commitment of one year to develop a new camp program
