7th Grade Math New Common Core Standards What does that mean for my child? Fewer concepts More in-depth More rigorous Mastery learning Level Playing Field

The Common Core Standards The Number System Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to computation with rational numbers. Expressions and Equations Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions. Solve real life mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations. Ratios and Proportional Relationships Analyze proportional relationships. Use these relationships to solve real world problems.

Statistics and Probability Geometry Draw, construct, and describe geometrical figures. Describe the relationships between geometrical figures. Solve real life problems using angles, area, surface area, and volume. Statistics and Probability Use random sampling to draw inferences about a population. Draw informal comparative inferences about two populations. Investigate chance and develop probability models.

Develop the following Mathematical Practices Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. Reason abstractly and quantitatively. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Model with mathematics. Use appropriate tools strategically. Attend to precision. Look for and make use of structure. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Homework Yes, they really do have it everyday. It won’t all be in the book. There are a few rare exceptions. When in doubt check the website. We practice to solidify our skills, determine what we still need to work on, and to develop mastery. Late work will be completed in Saturday School.

Grading Point System Class work (5-25 pts) Homework (5 – 15 pts) Quizzes ( about 50 pts) Tests (100- 200 pts) Projects (50 – 100 pts) Open Responses (25-50 pts)

Web Site Syllabus Announcements about upcoming quizzes, tests, projects Assignments Copies of homework (if a handout) Pictures of our active learning

What can you do to help your child be successful in math this year? Encourage them to ask questions if they don’t understand or if they are confused. Monitor homework completion. Touch base with your child frequently to know when they should be studying for quizzes and tests, etc. Let me know immediately if there is any kind of issue or concern.

Thank You for Coming Tonight!
