DEFINITION REACTION / RESPONSE ESSAY P. 138 It is a common writing task that appears in every academic discipline. The WRITER gets the prompt – visual or written – to think about and then to respond to. Prompts: quotes, pieces of literature, photos, paintings, multimedia presentations, and news events. The WRITER’s reactions are based on his feelings, opinions, and personal observations about the prompt. The WRITER’s task: 1. Summarize the prompt 2. Give personal reaction to it. DEFINITION REACTION / RESPONSE ESSAY P. 138

PATTERN OF ORGANIZATION P. 138-139 INTRODUCTION: (Paragraph 1) Description of summary of the thing being reacted to, making it clear to the reader. If it is a reading, photo, or film, mention the title and author of the work. The Thesis Statement is the last sentence of the paragraph. BODY - 1ST REACTION: (Paragraph 2) Topic Sentence Supporting Details: From the prompt or Original ideas and opinions BODY - 2ND REACTION: (Paragraph 3) Supporting Details CONCLUSION: (Paragraph 4) Overall reaction to the prompt mentioned in the introduction Evaluate whether the prompt had an overall effect or impact on you. OUTLINE: listings with subpoints SUMMARIZE: main points or facts only RELATE / COMPARE / CONTRAST / DISTINGUISH / DIFFERENTIATE: explain connections and associations of 2 things, whether similar or different. EXPLAIN / ILLUSTRATE: using a diagram, graph, or concrete example to illustrate your answer. EVALUATE / ASSESS / CRITICIZE / JUSTIFY / ARGUE: use critical thinking and persuasive language to say how good or how bad something is. NOTE: When answering questions on a test, use only the space provided. This space will tell you how much to include in your answer.
