The UIC Environment Strategy Reporting System: Data Collection, Elaboration and Dissemination Eurostat working group on rail, 7th November 2013, Luxembourg Veronica Aneris, Senior Advisor Energy and Environment UIC

The UIC Energy & CO2 database Energy & CO2 data collection became part of the UIC Official Statistics in 2008 Actually we have a complete 7 years time line series 2005-2010 of about 30 companies mainly EU. Early 2014 we will data up to 2012. Enlargement of data collection to NON-EU Countries preview for coming years The whole system of data collection has recently been revised and improved The UIC Environment Strategy Reporting System The UIC Energy & CO2 database Veronica Aneris – 07.11.2013

Targets The UIC Environmental Strategy Reporting System “on-line tool” The Database: collects all energy consumption, CO2 emission, PM-NOX data for all european railway companies from year 2005 plus 1990 baseline. The Methodological rules: Guidelines for UIC members to send data correctly + sound and proven methodology for calculations On-line tool: a user-friendly internet corridor for members to send data to UIC Annual reports: Presentation of yearly progress (or failure….) towards the targets Policy for communication: Rules to share data internally and externally, preserving confidentiality where necessary The Database The methodological rules Targets The “on-line tool” The annual report The policy for data communication Veronica Aneris – 07.11.2013

The EES Strategy 2030 Targets 1. 2. 4. 3. Exhaust Emission: Nitrogen and Particulate Matter Veronica Aneris – 07.11.2013

OUTPUT DATA: Railway Sector Environmental Performances Absolute Values Total Energy Consumed by Railways Total CO2 emissions produced by Railways - (At World level coming soon…? :) - at Company Level (1 &2 ) - at European level (3) Specific Values Specific Energy Consumption per pkm and per tkm Specific CO2 emissions per pkm and tkm - (At World level coming soon…? :) -at Company Level (1 &2 ) -at European level (3) Veronica Aneris – 07.11.2013

TARGET 1 – CLIMATE PROTECTION …IS ON TRACK Specific CO2 emissions trend 1990-2010: Passengers: -26% Freight:- 41%

TARGET 1 – CLIMATE PROTECTION FOR SOME COMPANIES IT IS STILL A LONG WAY TOWARDS ZERO EMISSIONS Specific CO2 emissions in passenger transport, 2010 38 grCO2/pkm (average) Specific CO2 emissions in freight transport, 2010: 18 grCO2/tkm (average) Veronica Aneris – 07.11.2013

2020 Railways will reduce their specific average CO2 emissions from train operation by 30% compared to the 1990 base year, measured per passenger-km and ton-km. CO2 emissions per pkm and tkm 1990 2020 2030 2050 -50% -100% -30% 2030 By 2030 Railways will reduce their specific average CO2 emissions from train operation by 50%. In addition, by 2030 the European railways will not exceed the total CO2 emission level from train operations in absolute terms even with projected traffic growth compared to the 1990 base year. 2050 Railways will strive towards carbon-free train operation by 2050 and provide society with a climate neutral transport alternative.
