Volume! These kids love volume.

Volume Review Volume is a measure of how much space something takes up. Typically measured in Liters (mL, L) Or in cubic Meters (cm3, m3)

5th Grade Math You learned how to find cubic volume Length x Width x Height What is the volume of this box?

Learning Target I can measure liquid volume… I can measure an irregular object… using a graduated cylinder

But what about liquids or irregular objects? Graduated Cylinder!

Graduated Cylinder Gee Whiz! How do I read a graduated cylinder? You need to read from the bottom of the meniscus.

Read a meniscus 1. Get at eye level 2. Read the bottom of the meniscus

Practice Eye level Identify Scale Bottom of the meniscus Record your answer with label - mL

Now you can get this joke…

You are a graduated cylinder genius!

What’s this about irregular objects?

Science HISTORY! Archimedes got into a full bathtub and noticed that the water spilled over the edge of the tub. The water was proportionately displaced by the volume of his body.

Water Displacement So, the amount of stuff you put into a graduated cylinder will proportionately displace water. Read initial volume – V1 Lower object into water Read second volume – V2 V2-V1= object volume

Practice V1= Add Fish V2= V2-V1= V1= Add Dude V2= V2-V1=
