UNIT 4 - MATERIALS METALS

INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY LIST TEN METALLIC OBJECTS

METALS PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Metals have shiness, they have LUSTER. Metals are good CONDUCTORS of HEAT and ELECTRICITY. Metals are SOLID, except mercury that is liquid. Metals can be shaped into sheets, it means that they are MALLEABLE. Metals can be shaped into wires, it means that they are DULTILE. Metals are resistant to scratching, they are HARD. Metals return to their original shape, it means that thet are ELASTIC.

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES Metals form CATIONS, positive particles. Metals form CATIONS, positive particles. Metals OXIDIZE easily, so it is said that they RUST. Metals OXIDIZE easily, so it is said that they RUST.

Where can we find metals? We can find NATIVE metals like COPPER, SILVER, or GOLD. We can find NATIVE metals like COPPER, SILVER, or GOLD. We can also find metals in ORES inside the Earth. We can also find metals in ORES inside the Earth. The process used to obtain metals from its ores is called REFINING. The process used to obtain metals from its ores is called REFINING.

What is the most important metal? IRON is the most important metal. IRON is the most important metal. What is the most important iron ALLOY? STEEL is the most important iron alloy.

IRON PRODUCTION

QUESTIONS ABOUT IRON PRODUCTION 1. List the raw materials used in iron production. 2. Where is iron produced? 3. Write the range of temperature used in the blast furnace. 4. How high are some furnaces?

5. How much iron can a furnace produce per day? 6. List the products obtained from the blast furnace. 7. Name the most important elements added used to obtain steel from iron.

How are metallic material classified into? Metallic materials are classified into… What are ferrous metals made of? Ferrous metals are made of …. How can be ferrous metals identified? They can be identified …… What is the characteristic of non-ferrous metal? The characteristic of non ferrous metals is that they…. List five examples of non-ferrous metals.

List eight common pure metals. What is an alloy? An alloy is …

FERROUS METALS NAMEALLOY OF IRON AND…. PROPERTIESUSES Mild steel (acero templado) Up to 0,6% of Carbon (C) Tough (tenaz) It rusts easily. Common in workshops.
