Ferrous Metals All ferrous metals, such as steel, contain Iron. They will rust unless they are treated. E.g. painted

Non - Ferrous Metals Non - ferrous metals, such as Aluminium, do not contain Iron. They do not rust, but they may become tarnished.

Alloys Alloys are metals that are a mixture of two or more pure metals. These mixtures can be ‘tailor-made’ to give specific properties.

Mild Steel Classification :- FERROUS - consists of IRON and 0.3% CARBON Properties :- MILD STEEL is tough, ductile and malleable. It has high tensile strength and can be easily joined. However, it has poor resistance to corrosion. Uses :- It is a general purpose metal, used to make girders, nails, screws, hinges, bolts and car bodies.

Stainless Steel Classification :- ALLOY - STEEL with 18% CHROMIUM and 8% NICKEL Properties :- STAINLESS STEEL is hard, tough and has very good resistance to corrosion. Uses :- It is used for a variety of items which often get wet such as sinks, cutlery, dishes, pipes and teapots.

High Carbon Steel Classification :- FERROUS - Consists of IRON and 1.5% CARBON Properties :- HIGH CARBON STEEL is very hard, but less ductile, tough and malleable than mild steel. It is very difficult to cut but easily joined. Uses :- Hand tools such as hammers, chisels, screwdrivers, taps and dies are made from high carbon steel.

Aluminium Classification :- NON-FERROUS - Pure Metal Properties :- ALUMINIUM is lightweight, soft, ductile, malleable and resistant to corrosion. It is a good conductor of heat and electricity, can be welded and polishes well. Uses :- It is used for aircraft bodies, saucepans, cooking utensils, packaging, foil, cans and window frames.

Copper Classification :- NON-FERROUS - Pure Metal Properties :- COPPER is malleable, ductile, tough and resistant to corrosion. It is a good conductor of heat and electricity and can be easily joined. Uses :- It is used for electrical wiring, hot water tanks, central heating pipes and PCB’s (printed circuit boards).

Zinc Classification :- NON-FERROUS - Pure Metal Properties :- ZINC is easily worked and extremely corrosion resistant. However, it has very poor strength and a low melting point. Uses :- It is mainly used to coat steel products, such as watering cans and roofing sheets to make them weather proof. It is also suitable for intricate casting because of its low melting point.

Brass Classification :- ALLOY - Consists of 65% COPPER and 35% ZINC Properties :- BRASS is corrosion resistant and easily joined. It is a good heat and electrical conductor and casts well. Uses :- Because of its polished finished it is commonly used for ornaments, such as fire guards. It is also used for handles and boat fittings as it is easily cast into intricate shapes.
