Virtual Seed Lab Objective: Students will: Set-Up and fill in their Research Notebook. Understand requirements for seeds to germinate and grow; Be able to explain and analyze the growth patterns of seedlings. Recognize differences between plants in their germination and growth requirements

Research Lab Notebook - lets get started: Here is an Overview of how we will set up our Notebooks for every lab: Page 1: Title Page Page 2 -4: Table of Contents Page 5 leave blank (just in case) Page 6 - 13: Label with: Page number Date Title of Lab/experiment OR Research Question? Did you remember to add the date, title and page number to your Table of Contents? If not, do so!

Time to Set Up your Biology Research Notebook! ***We never write on the left page of our Notebook!!!! Title Page: open to your first page (should be on the right side) See next slide: the information needs to be written in the very center of the page! In the top right hand corner write the date. In the bottom right hand corner write the “1” (its your page number!).

Your Name (Jane/John Doe Set up your Title Page: (left side) (leave blank) . (right side) Date Example: Research Biology 2018-2019 Your Name (Jane/John Doe Riverside High School, Leesburg, VA 20176 1.

Time to Set Up your Biology Research Notebook! ***We never write on the left page of our Notebook!!!! Table of Contents: Turn to your next page (right side only!) At the top, in the center, write “Table of Contents” either in ALL CAPS or underlined. In the top right hand corner write the date. In the bottom right hand corner write the “2” (its your page number!).

Notebook Set-Up Cont. Virtual Seed Lab: Research Question & Model Turn to your next page (right side only!) At the top, in the center, write “Virtual Seed Lab” either in ALL CAPS or underlined. In the top right hand corner write the date. In the bottom right hand corner write the “6”. Below the Title, drop down 2-3 lines to write the headers for this page (always start to the left). First Header: Research Question: Second Header: Research Model: (leave a few spaces between headers) See next slide and complete this page.

Lets add our Model to the (left side) (right side) Date VIRTUAL LAB SEED EXPERIMENT 6. Research Question : What do seedlings need to germinate? Research Model : Germinating Seeds water CO2 light

Notebook Set-Up Cont. Virtual Seed Lab: Student Understandings Turn to your next page (right side only!) At the top, write the title and date again. In the bottom right hand corner write “7”. Below the Title, drop down a few spaces and write the Header, “Student Understandings” Repeat for Page 8. See next slides to complete these page. We will fill in this section in class This is where we document background information about the organism(s) and processes we are researching (more to come on this in class!)

EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Research Question: Null (Ho) Hypothesis: Alternative (Ha) hypothesis: we will add later during class Independent Variable: Experimental Group(s): will fill in while completing experiment in Part 2 of summer assignment Control: Seeds Soaked Overnight (10 hrs light and 14 hrs Dark at 23oC) Dependent Variable: Constants: we will add later during class

Filling out the Experimental Design: Research Question: What do seedlings need to germinate? Hypothesis Null: The Independent Variable (IV) will not effect the Dependent Variable (DV). What is your Independent Variable (IV) for the Virtual Seed Lab? This is going to vary and be based on your last name. See next slide. What is the Dependent Variable (DV)? Measurement of root and shoot length (cm)

Filling out the Experimental Design: What is your Independent Variable (IV) for the Virtual Seed Lab? This is going to be based on your last name. Instructions for these will come in next slides. Last Name Independent Variable Control vs Experiment Group A-E Time (exposed to light) A1 10 hrs light, 14 hrs dark vs. B1 24 hrs dark F-K A1 10 hrs light, 14 hrs dark vs. C1 24 hrs light L-O Type of Light A1 10 hrs light, 14 hrs dark vs. D1 Daylight P-T Rotation of seeds A1 soaked, not rotated vs. A2 soaked & rotated U-Z Presence of water A1 soaked vs. A3 not soaked
